PhD course Quality Assurance System

In order to comply with the requirements of the AVA3 model, the PhD School of the

University of Turin uses a Quality Assurance System to which the PhD course refers.

ANVUR, in response to a need that emerged at the European level and with the support of ENQA "European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education" and EQAR "European Quality Assurance Register", has proposed a new model for regular accreditation of offices and departments, university study courses and research doctorates (AVA 3).

Specifically, with reference to PhD courses, this model is structured as follows:

D.PHD.1 - Design of the Research PhD Course

D.PHD.2 - Planning and organization of training and research activities for the growth of PhD students

D.PHD.3 - Monitoring and improvement of activities

The PhD training path falls within the third level of training and the Dublin Descriptors outline its objectives:

  • Knowledge and understanding (PhD students who have demonstrated systematic understanding of a field of study and mastery of the research method associated with it)
  • Applying knowledge and understanding (Ability to apply their knowledge and understanding in a way that demonstrates a professional approach to work, and possession of adequate skills both to devise and support arguments and to solve problems in their field of study)
  • Making judgements (Ability to collect and interpret data - normally in one's own field of study – which are deemed useful in determining autonomous judgments, including reflection on social, scientific or ethical issues relating to such data)
  • Communication skills (Knowing how to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist interlocutors)
  • Learning skills (Having developed those learning skills that are necessary to undertake subsequent studies with a high degree of autonomy)

Monitoring and Review Committee ("Commissione di Monitoraggio e Riesame-CMR") of the PhD in Law, the Individual and the Market (CMR-PhD)
As of a.y. 2024/25, the Doctorate in Law, the Individual and the Market has set up a Monitoring and Review Committee for the doctoral course (CMR-PhD), chaired by the course coordinator, with the participation of a teaching component, a student component and technical-administrative support staff (as recommended by the Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Doctoral Courses 2023, point 4).

The tasks of the CMR-PhD are as follows

  • communicating the methods and deadlines within the PhD Course monitoring plan to the actors involved (PhD students, tutors, Teaching Board, PTA)
  • carrying out the periodic analysis of the data collected over the medium term (12 months), by identifying particular critical situations and the relevant intervention plans aimed at overcoming any criticalities detected
  • communicating the methods of structured listening to doctoral students (also by means of the questionnaires provided by ANVUR), analysing the results and if necessary, supplementing the survey with other tools
  • drawing up a concise Report for the Doctoral School in which the Review analyses are incorporated.

The members of the CMR-PhD are as follows:

PhD student component:

  • Vittoria Margherita Sofia Trifiletti
  • Erika Tognatti

Teacher component:

  • Mariapaola Aimo
  • Lorenza Mola
  • Davide Turroni

Technical-administrative staff component:

  • Simone Corciulo
  • Stefania Vivalda

Monitoring Committee for the a.y. 2023/2024
For the academic year 2023/2024 there was a Monitoring Committee set up in 2023. The Committee's official mandate was to monitor and evaluate the PhD course in accordance with ANVUR's guidelines. In carrying out this activity, the two questionnaires provided by ANVUR were distributed to all PhD students from the XXXV to XXXVIII cycles. The Commission's aim was to obtain meaningful feedback on the academic experience of the PhD candidates. The evaluation was divided into three parts: Research Activities, Disciplinary and Interdisciplinary Activities and Complementary Activities. The main questions were related to the following activities: - what the doctoral students appreciated about the activity; - what they found unsatisfactory; - what could be improved about these activities. The questionnaire also included questions concerning the PhD students' general opinion about the library, the offices, the tutor's support and more.

In order to meet the demands of AVA3, the doctoral course in Law, the Individual and the Market had set up a "QA Working Group" consisting of the same members as the Monitoring Committee.
